Every believer is given gifts to serve the body of Christ, and marriage does not put those gifts on hold – it places them side by side with another person’s. A strong Christian marriage isn’t just two individual callings running in parallel; it’s two people actively helping each other live out what God has placed in them.
1. One Body, Different Gifts
Romans 12:4-5 (KJV) — “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”
A husband and wife are two distinct “members,” each with their own gifts and callings, yet united as one. Supporting your spouse’s calling isn’t about losing your own identity in theirs – it’s recognizing that both of you were placed together, in part, to help each other flourish in what God has called you individually to do.
2. Aquila and Priscilla: Ministry as a Team
Acts 18 introduces Aquila and Priscilla as a married couple who worked, taught, and ministered together – even correcting a gifted preacher’s theology as a team (Acts 18:26). Their partnership shows that shared calling doesn’t require identical gifts; it requires a shared commitment to using whatever gifts each of you has for the same purpose.
3. What Getting in the Way of a Spouse’s Calling Looks Like
Sometimes, without meaning to, a spouse becomes an obstacle rather than a support – through jealousy of the attention ministry brings, resentment of the time it requires, or simply never asking what their spouse feels called to. Naming this honestly, without shame, is the first step to changing it.
4. Practical Ways to Support Your Spouse’s Calling
- Ask what they feel called to, and actually listen: Not every calling looks like formal ministry – it may be teaching, hospitality, business, or a quiet gift of encouragement.
- Make space in the household for it: Time, energy, and sometimes finances need to be shared, not just given grudgingly.
- Celebrate their growth, not just your own: A spouse’s flourishing is not a threat to the marriage – it strengthens it.
- Pray specifically for their calling: Not generically for “God’s blessing,” but for the actual work they feel called to do.
A marriage where both spouses actively cheer each other toward their calling, rather than quietly competing for space, tends to become far more than the sum of two individual lives – it becomes a genuine partnership in the work God has given both of you.
