When reality drifts far from that picture, it can feel less like a minor disappointment and more like grief. Scripture does not ask us to pretend that grief away. It offers something better: a God who is still directing our steps, even on the days we cannot see where the path leads.

1. Why Unmet Expectations Are Hard to Carry

For many single Christians, this shows up as watching friends marry while their own story seems to wait. For married couples, it can look like a marriage that carries struggles they never anticipated. Either way, the ache is real, and pretending it isn’t only pushes it underground. Naming the disappointment honestly before God is not a lack of faith – the Psalms are full of exactly this kind of honest lament.

2. What the Bible Teaches About God’s Sovereignty Over Our Plans

Proverbs 16:9 (KJV) — “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

This verse does not say our plans don’t matter – it says they are not the final word. Jeremiah 29:11 promises that God’s plans for His people are plans for good, even when they unfold on a timeline we would not have chosen. Isaiah 55:8-9 goes further, reminding us that God’s thoughts and ways are simply higher than ours – not because He is distant, but because He sees the whole story while we only see today’s chapter.

3. Practical Ways to Trust God in the Waiting

Practice gratitude for today: Naming specific, present blessings keeps hope from being held hostage to an unmet future.

Bring your disappointment honestly to God in prayer: He is not offended by honest questions.

Serve others in the season you’re in: Waiting seasons are rarely wasted when they are spent pouring into other people.

Keep a record of God’s past faithfulness: A simple journal of answered prayers becomes evidence to stand on when the present feels uncertain.

Stay planted in Christian community: Waiting is far heavier carried alone than carried alongside others who will pray with you.

4. A Story of an Unexpected Path Redeemed

Few lives illustrate this better than Joseph’s. Sold by his own brothers, forgotten in a prison, his plans interrupted again and again – yet years later he could say to those same brothers, “ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20). Joseph did not see the whole plan while he was living through the hardest parts of it. Neither will we, most of the time. But the same God who was quietly at work in Joseph’s unplanned story is at work in ours.

Trusting God’s plan does not mean pretending your plans didn’t matter. It means holding them with open hands, believing that the One directing your steps can be trusted with the timeline too.

[24

post-829","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-christian-living
["GET
