But Scripture consistently warns against making major, life-shaping decisions in isolation, however personal they may feel. There is a particular kind of safety that comes from inviting wise voices into the process.

1. What Proverbs Says About Counsel

Proverbs 11:14 (KJV) — “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

This proverb isn’t about outsourcing your decision to a committee. It’s about recognizing that love has a well-documented ability to blind us to things that are obvious to people who care about us but aren’t caught up in the same emotion.

2. Who Wise Counsel Might Include

Parents and family: People who have known you the longest often see patterns you can’t see in yourself.

A pastor or premarital counselor: Trained to ask the hard questions couples in love rarely ask each other.

Married mentors you respect: People a few steps ahead who can speak honestly about what marriage actually requires.

Close friends who know you well: Often the first to notice if you are becoming a different, unhealthier version of yourself in a relationship.

3. Balancing Counsel With Personal Conviction

Seeking counsel does not mean surrendering the decision entirely to others. It means weighing what you hear honestly, especially when several trusted voices raise the same concern independently. If every close, trustworthy person in your life has the same hesitation, that pattern deserves serious, prayerful attention – not defensiveness.

4. Why This Matters Most Before, Not After, the Wedding

Counsel is far more useful before a decision is made than after. Once a couple is married, the same concerns become much harder – though not impossible – to address. Taking the time to genuinely seek and weigh wise counsel before marriage is not a lack of confidence in the relationship. It is one of the wisest forms of confidence a couple can show.

Deciding whom to marry can feel like one of the most personal decisions a person will ever make

[10

post-842","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-christian-matrimony
["GET
