‘Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome’ (AIDS) is an infectious disease caused by ‘Human Immunodeficiency Virus’ (HIV). The virus impairs the cells of immune system leading to progressive destruction of body’s ability to fight infection. HIV is most commonly spread by sexual contact with an infected partner.
People who are tested positive in HIV antibody has been stigmatized by the society. They are broken and they are wounded in heart. How can such people experience healing? Can we identify with people who are in similar experience? Once, David was forced to take shelter in a cave to flee from King Saul. David wrote Psalm 142 from the cave seeking God’s intervention. He was in a helplessness situation. He was broken and wounded in his mind & body.
This psalm gives a detailed explanation about the experiences of a broken person in three relationships. Experiences within: ‘Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me’ (Ps.142:6). David is broken within. David says His experiences have broken his spirit within Him. He was in desperate need. Nobody is there to help him. All the crisis management system within him was failed and he felt powerless. He was put into a prison like experience.
No freedom of Movement and thought. These are the similar experiences the AIDS patient has within him. Societies keep a stigma that they are immoral and because of their evil life they are suffering. Is it true? Yes, of a less percentage. Most affected women and children are only victims. Can we see their broken hearts, broken relationships, and broken mental health?
Can we give them a new meaning to their life? Experiences with others: ‘Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life’ (Ps.142:4). Here King David expected his people would help. But they never helped him. No one considered him, even bothered about his situation. It shows their negative attitude against the brokenness. AIDS patients need help, but many don’t get it.
On the contrary they blamed for their situation and sometime even asked to leave home. Experiences with God: ‘I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy’ (Ps. 142:1). ‘I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living”’ (Ps.142:5). Experiencing God is acknowledging His Goodness. Here we see David cried out to the Lord. It was the situation David experience Gods mercy and goodness.
We are all called to do healing ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. When we look around the world we see the people having similar experience that David had. There are people are affected by AIDS, Leprosy and various epidemics. There are people affected by war, terrorism and exploitation. It is our prime duty to lead such people to the God and enable them to understand god’s mercy and goodness. We should care them; we should have compassion to them. Above all we should Love them. Healing is only possible with Love, Care and Compassion.
